A young man with brownish-black hair and blue goggles walked on the currently empty school grounds. He wore an armored bodysuit that was pitch black, it clinging to his body that was grown for combat. His face was covered by black was that hid the lower half of it, leaving only his hair to be exposed. The night sky was clear, the stars being the only thing from being as dark as his bodysuit. A gentle breeze brushed against him and his surroundings, making the grass and tree leaves dance.
Another slightly younger man was currently walking back to him dorm room, after a longs day work. Quite a few people would me upset over having to return home so late, but not this man. He enjoyed his job at the bakery near his school and he loved walking around at night. His green and short black hair feeling the breeze along with his tanned skin. His blue shirt, black pants and black shoes with red laces all had flour stains on them, but he didn't care. He took a bite of a piece of bread he brought with him, noting he'd have to eat more since he's been working and working a lot more.
As the older man caught the younger one in his vision, he began to prepare for his mission. The younger man seemingly unaware he was being watched and targeted. The older man slowly followed the younger one from the shadows, ready to swiftly end the younger man's life. He charged his left hand with a dark electrical power, meant to short-circuit his target's body systems and brain. Helpless, the target can only watch as the finishing blow was dealt.
Swiftly, he charged at the younger man in silence, only to have his attack miss by said target side-stepping his blow. The two men looked eyes, the older one's in shock while the younger one's was in confusion. The two men stood a few feet away, facing each other waiting for the other to break the silence. Only the sounds of nature could be heard as the only sound that was audio-able was their breathing and heartbeats.
"Who are you?" The younger man, named Ryder asked wonder what was going on.
His presence known, the older man known as Masked-Exterminator or Mask-X, simply wasted no words and tried to electrocute Ryder once again. An assassin never wasted a moment making idle-chit-chat with their target. They quickly and quietly ended them without drawing attention to themselves. The fact his target locked eyes with him only gave more reason for his death. Him living could tarnish the reputation Mask-X had, that as well as his pride wouldn't allow him to fail a mission.
Ryder dodged the on coming onslaught by Masked-X, who only be the grace of his ability to see heat signatures around him, able to dodge. The first attack he made was much easier to dodge than these, Masked-X was fast and aggressive. Ryder wanted answers but the fact his assailant was so tight-lipped and focused on killing him, made him come to terms with reality.
This was going to be a fight to the death.
Unlike Masked-X, Ryder wasn't a trained murdered. He was just a teen going to a boarding school and working at a bakery. The thought of why he was being targeted for death crossed his mind as, he dodged a blow that would have spelled doom for him. Aside from going to Monster School, he was just a normal human-elemental hybrid. He heard of hunters coming to the school to get students of rare breeds of monster, but doubted that was the case.
A pure breed elemental was worth more than a half-elemental. He dodged a blow aimed at his heart and tried to quiet the questions in his head. The attacks were getting too close, he'd be dead at this rate. He had only taken the lives of a group that tried to kidnap a girl he liked. He tried his best to spare them, but they forced his hand by using her as a hostage. As things turned out, she wasn't as traumatized from the event as him. He could only guess that death was a such a common occurrence that it left most in that school numb to it.
He used a move he learned in his martial arts class to divert the blow aimed for neck. In the same motion landed a counter-blow to his mid-section using a fiery fist. The blow sent X back a few feet, him clutching his side while trying to recover from the hit. Masked-X's mind raced processing the new information about his target. Fire and lightning are both forms of plasma, super heated air could also be used to guard against electrical based attacks. The blow he took had some power behind it, since ever through his armored suit he could still feel the blow and heat from it.
He needed to know exactly how much knew about how their powers matched up.
He send a blast of electricity at Ryder, using it as a feint while he moved in for his real attack. Ryder countered sending fire to cancel out the attack, only to receive a flying kick to the ribs by Mask-X from above their attacks. Ryder was sent rolling to the ground from the blow, apart of his ribs becoming bruised from the blow.
Ryder glared at Masked-X, still holding his bruised ribs as he got up. He send several fireball blasts at him, Masked-X avoiding all of them.
"Were you aiming at me?" The assailant asked mockingly before firing a large ball of crackling electrical energy at him.
"SHUT UP!" Ryder roared sending a stream of searing hot flames to reflect the ball right back at him, mixed with his own flames.
His shocked faced hidden by his goggled eyes and masked face, he quickly tried to avoid the attacks. He ended up being hit by both dead on, only to receive more a beating when flaming fist crashed into his face. The explosion that happened right afterward would have possibly killed him if it wasn't for his armor. Masked-X was sent flying straight into one of school's walls, leaving a nice impression of his body in the wall.
Ryder was now in his fully elemental form, his body basically being a living human shaped flame. He never had to resort such extremes before and had no practice using this form in life or death combat. All he knew was that had to take a risk and use whatever he had to get an edge on his assassin.
Masked-X struggled to get himself back up, holding his right side with his left arm. His face face showing barely any emotion at all, let alone pain.
"How long can you keep that cool face?" Ryder asked before sending a small wave of fire at his foe, intending to boil him inside that fancy armored suit of his. His foe counted the wave with his own electrical version. While the two attacks crashed into each other, X quickly fired a beam of dark lightning repeatedly at Ryder.
Ryder barely had any chance to form and defense or move, bracing himself as he was hit repeatedly but the attack. The negative energy in the attack injured him faster than he could recover by absorbing heat and oxygen around him.
"Just when my ribs start feeling better, I get hit with a beam spam!", Ryder thought to himself as he tried to endure the assault. Masked-X followed up his barrage with blasting his target with a ball filled with dark energy. Sending him crashing and burning through several trees and scorching the ground where he ended up.
Ryder fought through his pain to stand and glare at his opponent, "...I-I refuse to be...defeated l-like...THIS!" Ryder used all his concentration and power to a swirling vortex of fire around Masked-X, sending countless explosive fireballs at him.
Masked-X used his powers to unleash dark energy from his body to soften and reduce the damage from the fiery hell raining down on him. A massive explosion occurred once more, leaving a large crater in it's wake of destruction. A cloud of smoke obscured both fighter's vision, making it hard to see where the other was. Ryder wasted no time in waiting to too see if he killed his assassin or not, using his heat vision to see if he could spot Masked-X's body-heat.
Masked-X was in pretty bad shape to put it lightly, his armor had been either charred greatly or completely blown apart. His left arm had become completely burned, his burnt flesh and part of the bones in his arm showing. The pain was incredible, it would have many lesser men faint from the intensity. He refused to let it end here, his pride and training wouldn't allow it!
Ryder's vision was beginning to become blurry and his fatigue was becoming too much to ignore. He had to end this now or risk dying before buying those magical clothes that elemental wore. The kind that vanish when they went full elemental and appeared after they were returned to normal. Like hell he'd let all that hard working and saving go to waste over some punk with superpowers!
Both men traded glares with the other, X's goggles no longer hiding his brown eyes. Both called forth what little energy they could afford to use. They each fired a ball concentrated full of their energy and will to win, the attacks creating one final explosion of raging power.
Ryder was no back in his human form again, his injuries mostly internal. He struggled to see where his foe was only to lock eyes with him once again.
His was directly above him, aiming a beam to finish him off and end his short school career here. Just before the final blow could be dealt, people finally started to show up to see where all the explosions we're coming from. Masked-X swore in his head now seeing his wouldn't be able to complete his mission, if he used the last of his energy to vaporized Ryder, he'd have less energy to escape the crowd of on lookers.
His pride and sense of duty fought against his survival instincts and common sense, the latter wining when he heard teachers telling students to move aside. With that, he vanished off into the night, leaving the nearly dead Ryder to count his lucky stars that he made it out alive.
